Lara

The protagonist.

A pivotal character navigating turbulent waters. It’s a challenging period – she feels as if she’s losing her grip on reality. Or is she just becoming an easier prey for someone’s manipulations – a pawn or a queen, in the grand game? If there’s any game at all…

Lazar

Fiancé.

Calm, reliable, a realist. A criminal inspector and former SAJ (Special Anti-Terrorist Unit), whose on-duty injury left permanent physical scars, and troubling psychological ones. When incidents start, he struggles to keep his composure. But when chaos truly descends, he does what he’s trained for. Calmly and reliably.

Bogdan

Uncle.

Academician. A world authority on the Neolithic period in Europe. Raised Lara after she lost her parents, and guided her toward an academic career. Lately, he has become the source of Lara’s growing frustration. Enjoys horticulture – his garden is a testament to his meticulous nature.

Liu Min

刘敏

Far-away friend.

Met Lara in San Agustín, Colombia, during a student exchange. They became friends, and spent two fun months there. After her studies, she earned a PhD in ancient scripts. Came to Belgrade for a conference on Neolithic Balkan studies, organized by Bogdan. Not a nerd, really, just sometimes looks like one.

CJ Downey

Wealthy heir.

Lara’s friend from the famous student exchange. An archaeologist because he could afford it, and because as a boy, his idol was Indiana Jones. Got a PhD anyway, just to check that off his list. Good-natured, naive, carefree thanks to his wealth. Texan, hence the cowboy hat.

Mary Anne

Traveller.

The wealthy heir’s companion on his European trip, a pretty face from the Midwest. Doesn’t handle complex topics well, or perhaps she handles everything too well, depending on the perspective. Other people’s perspectives don’t interest her, so she’s doing just fine, really.

Jovana

Friend from university.

A trusted person. A refuge. By chance, the director of the Lepenski Vir Museum, where she escaped from Belgrade’s city life and urban neuroses. When Lara gets sick of everything, she escapes to Jovana. Not overly ambitious, she’s found her place.
